HOW MUCH IS YOUR COUNSELLING WORTH?

People see counselling in many different ways, some ways are helpful, and some are not.

Firstly you are an important person, whether you feel important or not. If you don’t feel important this is the very time that counseling can help you. However these feelings of worthlessness may affect the way you view counselling in the following ways.

Time: When you make an appointment you need to give yourself time to come to counselling. For a short while this is an important part of your life and should be given priority. You need to invest time in yourself and counselling.

Yourself: This is another important part of your counselling agreement. Some people find it hard to give attention to themselves when they are not feeling the best, but again make it a priority for the present.

Work: Counselling is hard work and often painful. Your counselor is skilled and professional and will not lead you where you do not want to go. You are in charge/control of the session. If you feel like resting, say so, and explore why you resist. This does not mean you have to tell all your secrets. It does mean there is some hard thinking, feeling and behaviour work to be done. There are great benefits in the end.

Trust: Perhaps you are a person who finds it hard to trust people. Perhaps people have always let you down. Allow yourself the time to trust your counsellor. It takes time to believe in someone, especially when you have had a bad experience. If you find that you really do not work well with your counsellor, talk to someone and together you will find someone you can trust.

Remember you are worth these investments!
